SUMIs – Exposure Scenarios for Mixtures

Posted on: January 21, 2016

SUMIs are a new emerging reporting requirement developed by Industry to deal with the safe use of mixtures. UL (formerly Safeware Quasar) has identified this as a significant regulatory development and have produced a practical guide to help companies understand their obligations.

Since the first REACH registration deadline in 2010, additional information in the form of Exposure Scenarios (ES’s) has been appended to substance safety data sheets (SDS’s) as an annex, assuming the revised title of Extended Safety Data Sheet (e-SDS).

For formulators and suppliers of chemical mixtures the problem is far more complex since these products may contain multiple ingredients with different hazards and exposure types. There has been confusion within the industry on how to deal with Exposure Scenarios for mixtures and how this information should be communicated in the supply chain.
Industry and Stakeholders have been working together to develop a simplified approach for communicating the Safe Use of Chemical Mixtures Information in the supply chain. It is envisioned that information for hazardous mixtures supplied for Industrial/Professional use will be accompanied with a simplified document called a “SUMI” (Safe Use of Chemical Mixtures Information) that is attached as an Annex to the SDS.

In addition to producing a guide to help companies understand their obligations, the Safeware Quasar team are developing a software module specifically designed to help users quickly and accurately meet the requirements of Articles 14 and 37 of REACH. The regulatory team are also available to provide advice and guidance for anyone who requires assistance to further understand the applicable regulations.
